Upstream Router Replacement

06-20-09 12:02 AM — The router replacement is complete in Seattle, and full redundancy has been restored to the network. Other routers in the network have been upgraded, and the system is back to 100%. This should be the end of the short internet outages we’ve seen over the last week or two. If you have any questions, please feel free to send mail to support.

06-19-09 — Our upstream provider is replacing a core router this evening, between 8pm and midnight pacific time (US). They have told us this will result in a 5 – 10 minute outage sometime during that time period. This should eliminate the issues we’ve been seeing with our internet connection going down due to routes being lost.

If you have any questions, please contact us at support@smileglobal.com. We will be monitoring the situation throughout the evening, and make updates here as information comes in.

Authentication Issue

Smile suffered an issue with the authentication system for email users. The issue was intermittent, and not all users were affected. The problem was isolated and repaired by noon pacific time, and authentication returned to normal. A very small number of users experienced issues with Outlook and were receiving errors. Deleting the account in Outlook and recreating it resolved the issue.

Internet Slow Down

Smile Internet, and a number of other providers in the Seattle area are seeing an internet service slow down. We are working to move our connectivity completely to our secondary circuit and should have that completed shortly.

We will update this page as more information becomes available.

Update: The router that was causing the slowdown was repaired, and full service was restored. Intermittent service lasted about 35 minutes, with a short outage period.

Web Server Slow Down

Yesterday one of Smile’s web servers saw a considerable slow down, at times, the server was unable to answer occasionally. We started troubleshooting and found it was a problem with a WordPress blog site, that appeared to be getting attacked from a site in China. We disabled the site, and brought the server back to 100%, eventually finding that there was some comment spam that was causing the blog to try and contact itself every second or two. That comment spam has been deleted and everything appears to be back to normal.

Scheduled Maintenance

Smile has scheduled a maintenance period for Tuesday June 5, from 11:00pm – 1:00 am Pacific Time US (-0700). We will be moving back to our primary internet circuit. We anticipate less than 15 minutes of downtime during this period.
